Why Earthquakes Often Disrupt Drinking Water
With large magnitude earthquakes in the news lately, it’s important to know that municipal water systems depend on much more than the pipe entering your house, making water safety an important concern.
They may depend on:
- Underground water mains
- Pumping stations
- Electrical power
- Treatment facilities
- Storage tanks
- Pressure systems
- Valves
- Monitoring equipment
An earthquake does not have to destroy the entire system to cause problems.
The violent shaking of the ground can break or separate underground pipes. Also, power outages may interfere with pumps and treatment facilities. This causes water pressure to fall, and damaged infrastructure can increase the risk that contaminants enter the system.
Sometimes the result is clear: there is no water at all. But sometimes, the more dangerous problem is harder to spot: The water is still running, but you do not yet know whether it is safe.
That is why earthquake water preparedness involves two separate questions: Do I have water? and Is the water safe? A resilient household needs an answer to both.
The Biggest Mistake: Assuming Running Water Means Safe Water
The biggest mistake is not necessarily about lacking a high-end water filter, but actually thinking that if water comes out of the faucet, it must be safe. After an emergency, authorities may issue different types of advisories.
Here are a few:
Boil-Water Advisory
Water may contain harmful microorganisms, so residents may be instructed to boil water before drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or preparing food.
Do-Not-Drink Advisory
Officials may be concerned about chemicals or other contaminants that boiling will not necessarily remove.
Do-Not-Use Advisory
In more serious situations, residents may be instructed not to use tap water at all. If this is the case, knowing the difference is important because boiling and filtering do not solve every problem. If authorities say not to drink or use the water, follow that guidance.
Do This Instead:
A strong emergency water plan, regardless of the disaster, does not rely on just one item, product, or piece of gear. It uses several layers.
Layer 1: Stored Water
Stored water should be your first defense.
Ready.gov recommends planning for at least one gallon of water per person per day for several days for drinking and sanitation.
For a family of four:
4 people × 1 gallon × 7 days = 28 gallons
Having stored water gives you something very valuable after a disaster: TIME. You will not have to rush to the store, wait in line, look for water, or treat unsafe water right away. You can stay home, keep up with official updates, and make better choices.

Number of people × 1 gallon × 7 days
Then compare that number with what you actually have stored. The difference between what you need and what you have is your preparedness gap, which should be your new focus.
Layer 2: Water Containers
Water is not very useful if you cannot safely store or carry it. Consider having a combination of:
- Dedicated drinking-water containers
- Smaller portable containers
- Collapsible water carriers
- Containers that can be filled at emergency distribution locations
Large containers may work well at home, but smaller containers become important if you ever have to transport water in an evacuation event.
Layer 3: Water Filtration
Filtration matters more if you start running low on stored water and need to use another source, but not all filters do the same thing. Depending on the design, a filter may reduce certain:
- Bacteria
- Protozoa
- Sediment
- Chemicals
- Heavy metals
Other filters may not address those hazards at all. A common mistake is buying a product called a “water filter” and thinking it will make any water safe. Instead, make sure you know exactly what your filter is meant to remove vs. a purifier.

Layer 4: Purification and Disinfection
Purification provides another layer. Boiling water can kill many disease-causing organisms when water is microbiologically unsafe. Chemical disinfection may also be appropriate in certain emergencies. However, boiling does not always make water with chemicals safe to drink.
If water has fuel, toxic chemicals, or other pollutants, boiling might not help and can even make some contaminants stronger as the water evaporates. That is why official advisories matter. Treating water is helpful. But it does have limits.
Why Bottled Water Alone Is Not Enough
Bottled water is an excellent emergency resource, but storing enough water can eventually become difficult.
A four-person household using the one-gallon-per-person baseline needs:
- 12 gallons for 3 days
- 28 gallons for 7 days
- 56 gallons for 14 days
And that does not include additional needs caused by heat, illness, pets, cooking, or sanitation. Water is also heavy (One gallon weighs a little more than eight pounds). At some point, being prepared is less about storing more water and more about asking a bigger question:
What will we do if the water interruption lasts longer than our stored supply?
