What is Emergency Preparedness, and why does it matter?
However, some communities can wait months or years for assistance. Common sense tells us that this trend is not going to reverse any time soon. Many even suggest having enough supplies to last two weeks due to the severity of modern disasters.
What is it?
Basic Emergency preparedness means having the supplies, plan, and awareness to handle unexpected events like power outages, storms, or evacuations. At a minimum, every family should be ready to operate independently for 72 hours. If your family is sheltering in place, two weeks worth of supplies is a worthy goal to work towards. But here are the bare basics.
the core essentials:
- Water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Food (non-perishable, no prep required)
- Light (flashlights, batteries)
- Communication (contacts, phone, backup power)
- First Aid Kit & PPE
- Documents of Identification & CASH
NOTE: These align with FEMA’s core recommendations for basic survival supplies
